Sir Gregor MacGregor took it upon himself to “free” Florida of its Spanish hold, starting with Amelia Island. He sent a spy ahead to spread rumors of the impending attack and with a force of only 55 men marched upon Fort San Carlos. Swarmed by gnats and mosquitoes the men stuck sprigs of dog fennel in their helmets as they advanced along the shoreline. When Morales, commander of the fort saw the men he was convinced of the rumor and fled. Without a single shot being fired they raised the MacGregor family flag, the Green Cross of Florida. Several months later Luis Aury, a privateer sanctioned by the revolutionary Republic of Mexico and joined by members of Jean Lafitte’s band of pirates sailed on Amelia and raised her sixth flag, the Mexican Revolutionaries. The United Sates sent in troops and ended Aury’s claim, holding the island in trust for Spain.
