Catherine De Medici, Catholic Queen Regent of France seized the opportunity to expand France’s frontier in the New World. The French Huguenots, who had suffered cruel persecution by Henry II, were in need of sanctum. When Gaspard Coligny, leader of the Party, presented the option of seeking an outpost for France, Catherine was all too willing to expend the Huguenots at the prospect of seizing a share of the riches of the New World.
