Smuggling, privateering and the slave trade attracted pirates to Amelia Island's harbor which was the back door to the US since the Embargo Act of 1807 had closed off trade with Europe. With the secret blessing of the US, the Patriots overthrew the Spanish and hoisted their own flag in March of 1812.
Spain demanded return of the island and built Fort San Carlos to help protect their territory. Pirates' treasure and Spanish galleons are reported to be buried in Old Town beneath an oak pierced by a hanging chain. However, the tree only appears to those lacking a shovel.
