In 1736 James Oglethorpe, founder of the colony of Georgia discovered an island, still owned by Spain, dense with the beauty of the woods and the scent of blooming orange trees. He named it Amelia in honor of the daughter of King George, II of England. Until her dying day, our namesake kept a locket around her neck with a likeness of Frederick, Crown Prince of Prussia to whom she was betrothed, but never married.
